Medication Options for High Blood Pressure (Heart Health)
Here are a few different types of blood pressure drugs and some information on how they work. Often, two or more drugs work better than one. Talk to your doctor to find out which medications work best for you.
Alpha-blockers reduce nerve impulses to blood vessels. This allows blood to pass more easily, causing your blood pressure to go down.
Alpha-beta-blockers work the same way as alpha-blockers but they also slow the heartbeat. As a result, less blood is pumped through the vessels and blood pressure goes down.
Nervous system inhibitors
Nervous system inhibitors relax blood vessels by controlling nerve impulses. This widens blood vessels and blood pressure falls.
Vasodilators directly open blood vessels by relaxing the muscle in the vessel walls, causing blood pressure to go down.
